Overview

The University of Melbourne is committed to providing a safe workplace for staff, students, visitors, volunteers and contractors. This includes the provision of:

  • safe infrastructure and equipment
  • appropriate induction, training and supervision
  • risk management
  • safe work policies and procedures
  • workplace inspections
  • incident reporting and investigation

Staff, students, visitors, volunteers and contractors in turn must:

  • take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of other personnel who may be affected by their conduct
  • not wilfully place at risk the health or safety of any personnel
  • cooperate with the University to comply with Occupational Health and Safety legislation
  • undertake tasks in accordance with relevant safe work procedures
  • wear correct personal protective equipment specified in safe work procedures
  • seek supervision and guidance from the relevant supervisor for all new or modified work procedures
  • participate in health and safety information, training and induction procedures
  • report hazards and incidents

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management is the practice of reducing risk in the workplace by ensuring a safe working environment. This is achieved by having good safe work procedures, providing appropriate induction and training for staff and students, and regularly inspecting the workplace for hazards. Environmental (E) management is the practice of reducing the negative impact on the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling.
