Sir Edward Dunlop Medical Research Foundation Grants 2016


Applications are called for Medical Research Grants. The Foundation has a focus on illnesses of veterans and their families.
Grants in all areas of basic and applied medical research will be considered.  Diseases affecting veterans and their families are similar to those of the general community.  One grant will be awarded to an appropriate application for research into mental health.

Grants are awarded up to the amount of $20,000.

  1. Successful applicants must be prepared to present their findings at a Foundation’s annual symposium.
  2. Preference will be given to high quality applicants in the early stages of their career. NHMRC grants will be given priority.
  3. Grant recipients in 2015 will not be given a grant in 2016.
  4. Grants from scientists based in Victorian institutions will be considered.
  5. Completed applications should be submitted by email to: d.gillespie@unimelb.edu.au

Heart Attack…Stroke…Are you at risk?

Heart attacks can happen at any time to anyone.  It is important to know if you are at risk.  There are many factors that increase your chances of having a heart attack including:

  • Previous Heart Attack
  • Heart Related Disease
  • High Cholesterol
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes

Local physicians are conducting a research study of an investigational medication and its ability to reduce your risk of having a heart attack and other cardiovascular events such as a stroke.  If you are currently taking a medication to lower your cholesterol and have one or more of the conditions listed above, you may qualify for participation in this study.  All testing, treatment and parking will be provided free of charge. This project has been approved by the Austin Health and St Vincent’s Hospital (Melbourne) Human Research Ethics Committee: HREC 12/SVHM/2.

Do you have Type 2 Diabetes?

We are testing the effect of an investigational drug on cardiovascular events (heart attack and stroke) in patients with Type 2 Diabetes who may be at risk of these events. If you are male or female aged 50 years or older have Type 2 Diabetes and have never had a heart attack or stroke, you may qualify for a clinical trial. You will be medically supervised. There will be no costs involved. Visits are at the Metabolic Disorders Centre, Austin Health, Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. This project has been approved by the Austin Health and St Vincent’s Hospital (Melbourne) Human Research Ethics Committee D: HREC D513BC00001.

Obesity Study - We are seeking volunteers

We are currently studying the effects of a clinical trial medication in overweight patients with a history of Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes and Multiple Cardiac Risk Factors. We are currently looking for volunteers with one or more of the conditions listed below:

  • Previous Heart Attack
  • Angioplasty or Heart Bypass Surgery
  • Previous Stroke or Carotid Surgery
  • A blocked artery in the leg which causes symptoms (pain, reduced walking)
  • Previous vascular surgery or amputation of lower limbs
  • Diabetes with high Cholesterol and /or high Blood and/or reduced kidney function

This is a large investigational study involving approximately 12,000 patients worldwide. Trial visits are held at the Metabolic Disorders Centre, Austin Health, Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.  All testing, treatment and parking will be provided free of charge.  This project has been approved by the Austin Health and St Vincent’s Hospital (Melbourne) Human Research Ethics Committee D: HREC APD356-G000401.

Do you want to lose weight? Are you planning pregnancy in the next 6 months? If the answer is YES, we want to hear from you!

Researchers are recruiting women aged 18-38 with a BMI>30 who wish to lose weight before planning to become pregnant in the next 6 months. Participants will be placed on a 3 month weight loss plan and will then be observed prior to and during pregnancy. Trial visits are held at the Metabolic Disorders Centre, Austin Health, Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.  All testing, treatment and parking will be provided free of charge. This study has been approved by the Austin Health and Melbourne Health Human Research Ethics Committee: HREC /14/MH/71

Do you have type 2 diabetes? Do you have problems with your kidneys?

If the answer to both questions is Yes, you may be able to take part in a clinical research study.
The CREDENCETM Study is looking at an investigational (study) medication (taken as a daily capsule) that may help protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes.
We are looking for people who:

  • Are 30 years of age or older
  • Have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes
  • Have kidney problems related to their diabetes
  • Are currently taking medicines to control their kidney problems

If you choose to take part in the CREDENCETM Study, you will be looked after by an experienced study team who will carefully monitor your health and support your diabetes management.  You will continue to take your current diabetes medications. Are you overweight?

If yes, we are seeking volunteers with type 2 diabetes who are interested in participating in a placebo-controlled weight loss research study of an investigational medication.

You may qualify for the trial if:

  • You are obese (Body Mass Index between 30-60 kg/m2)
  • You have Type 2 Diabetes
  • You are between 18-65 years of age
  • You must be willing to participate in a 52 week research study involving approximately 12 outpatient visits
